- Algeria (the Vice-champion of Africa)
- China (the Champion of Asia)
- Korea (the bronze medalist of Asia)
- Japan (the host of the tournament)
- Serbia (the Champion of Europe)
- Germany (the Vice-champion of Europe)
- Italy (wild card)
- USA (the Champion of NORCECA zone)
- Dominican Republic (the Vice-champion of NORCECA zone)
- Brazil (the Champion of South America)
- Argentina (wild card)

The tournament is composed of four rounds. The participating teams have been divided on two groups – first round and second round. In the third and fourth round that will take 6 days, we will see 36 matches. The three top teams will gain promotion to the forthcoming Olympic Games in London.
