Slovakia step in for Czech Republic as 2019 women’s EuroVolley co-hosts

The 2019 edition of the women’s EuroVolley will be taking place in four countries – Turkey, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, with Slovakia stepping in for their neighbours from the Czech Republic as a co-host of Europe’s premier Volleyball event. As a result, the Czech Republic will contest the qualification rounds due to start later this summer while Slovakia are directly qualified for the Final Round. The championship is a truly historic one since for the very first time it will feature as many as 24 participating teams and matches will be taking place across four countries.

Turkey are hosting the women’s EuroVolley for the third time in history – after doing so in 1967 and 2003, when the home side claimed a historic silver medal. This is Turkey’s best result to date in the competition to go with bronze medals they won in 2011 in Serbia and last year in Azerbaijan. Poland hosted the 2009 edition while Hungary and Slovakia will be co-hosting a Volleyball tournament of this calibre for the first time in their history.

As for Slovakia, the event is a truly unique opportunity to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Volleyball in this country as well as to promote Volleyball in Slovakia and across the whole of Europe as well. Slovakia have a wealth of experience in hosting major Volleyball competitions and the women’s EuroVolley will be some kind of coronation of the terrific development the sport has experienced in this country.

Apart from the four co-hosts – Turkey, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia – the following teams have secured their participation in the 2019 women’s EuroVolley as per the final standing of the 2017 edition: Serbia, the Netherlands, Azerbaijan, Italy, Russia, Belarus, Germany and Bulgaria. Twelve more teams will qualify by January 2019 with the Czech Republic now set to play the national teams of Finland, Estonia and Sweden.
