In the last few days Katowice yet again hosted an event promoting FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Poland 2014. Let us remind that the city will be hosting the tournament’s final phase.

This time we enjoyed a bout between the female teams of second-league Sokół ’43 AZS AWF Katowice and Austrian ATSE GRAZ. It is worth mentioning that ATSE GRAZ players are coached by Polish born Jerzy Pawlus. The match finally ended with a 3:0 (25:20, 25:7, 25:19) victory for the local team. Sokół’s players proved that they fight to win, but the Austrian side, which has three Croatian players in their squad, also showed a good game.

School children from Katowice took seats in the stands. This was another event that helped in explaining the rules of the game and showing why volleyball is rightly regarded as one of the most difficult team sports. Long and rigorous training and many sacrifices are expected of the players, as was shown today by the girls and, at the previous event, by the male players of Effektor Kielce and ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle. The next part will take place June 18. The coordinator of the “Lubię Siatkę” (“I Like Volley”) initiative and TVP Katowice sportscaster, Robert Walczak, promises a great surprise for 10 thousand school kids from Katowice inside the Spodek hall.

Yesterday’s event was attended by representatives of the city of Katowice, Delegate to the President of Katowice for Strategic Events Planning, Ms. Ewelina Kajzerek, Head of Sports and Tourism Department, Mr. Sławomir Witek, as well as the ambassador of the “Lubię Siatkę” initiative, a former national team player – Marcin Prus, who sums it up: “You can raise interest in volleyball in anyone – a kindergartner and a high schooler – you just need to know how to talk to them”. He proves it every day, visiting students in schools of Katowice.
