On Sunday, late in the evening, the Italian coach Andrea Anastasi came to Warsaw. At the beginning of February 2011, Board of the Polish Volleyball Federation elected him on the position of the Polish Senior Men’s National Team. At the airport he gave the first interviews. Despite almost midnight, many journalists from press, radio and TV have been waiting for arrival of the new coach of the red-and-whites.
- I am very proud to be able to train the Polish National Team, which is one of the best in the world. I know I have two difficult years in front of me. During this period very important events will be performed - the World League final tournament in Poland, the European Championships and the Olympic Games Qualification Tournament - said Andrea Anastasi at the airport.
The coach Anastasi informed to be well aware how tight is the tournament calendar. - I know that the league season promises to be a long one. I want each of the players to have a short holiday, in order to have some rest both, mentally and physically. Furthermore, I will speak with each candidate about the play in the National Team - he said.
During the three-day stay Andrea Anastasi will meet with the executives of the Polish Volleyball Federation. On Wednesday, he will participate in a press conference organized at the Olympic Centre in Warsaw and also plans to sign a contract. After the meeting with journalists Andrea Anastasi will travel to Rzeszów. The CEV Cup semi-final match of Asseco Resovia against Sisley Treviso will be the first, the new coach will see right after his arrival to Poland. His debut as a coach will probably be on the 20th of May in Milicz, where the Polish volleyball players will play the first of two matches against Russia. The second one will take place the next day.
50-year-old Andrea Anastasi started his coach volleyball career as a 34-year-old, in Serie A2. Immediately, he reached the top level tournaments and finally after six years of coaching his talent was recognized and honored at being appointed coach of the National Team. He paid back the credit of trust very quickly - in the first year of the career with the National Team of Italy he won the World League and the European Championships (1999). But after failure at the 2002 World Championships in Argentina, he lost his job.
Again, in 2005 he became coach of the National Team of Spain, and after two years of hard work surprised the volleyball world - where, in dramatic circumstances, in spite of all .... his team, ranked 24th won the European Championship title in Moscow, defeating Russia (ranked 3rd ) the favorite of the tournament.
- It is a very good coach. I worked with him for many years and we always well understood each other, I like his work style. In a typical training issues, one should definitely pay attention to the technical workshop that he has, it is a very high one – said Matej Cernic, representative of Italy, now PlusLiga’s volleyball player.
