Qualification system for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo

On September 15, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has proposed the project of the qualification system for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC may approve or reject the project until February 2018.

According to the project, there will be three stages of the Olympic qualification:

  1. Intercontinental tournament with participation of champion and runner-up of each continental championship, the world champion and the host. The three best teams will secure spots for the Olympic Games.
  2. Three tournaments with top 12 teams from the FIVB World Ranking (four teams in each tournament) – the participants will be determined by the FIVB ranking from January 1 of tournament year. The winner of each tournament will get a spot.
  3. Five continental tournaments played according to rules set by continental federations. The winners will be granted with spots.

Participants of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo - in total 12 teams:

- The host team - Japan

- 3 teams qualified from the intercontinental tournament

- 3 teams qualified from the tournaments played according FIVB ranking

- 5 teams qualified from the continental tournaments.

- Work is ongoing on the revision of the international tournaments’ calendar, so there is no fixed date  for each stage of the Olympic qualifications. We still have to wait for this decision - said Mirosław Przedpełski, member of the FIVB Board. - The World Cup will be also held in Japan, however due to the fact that Japan is also the host of the Olympic Games, this time the World Cup will not be included in qualification system.
