The first day of competition in the FIVB Beach Volleyball Warmia Mazury World Tour, with seven Polish teams, marked the end of the adventure for two of them.
Women's Tournament
There were big emotions in the Thursday matches, but without a doubt the most interesting was the last game of the day. Kinga Kolosinska and Jagoda Gruszczynska won with three times Olympic champion - Kerri Walsh Jennings, who is currently playing with Nicole Branagh. Polish team was better after big sport’s fight in tie-break, while they were already losing in it 7:10. It was hard. We are very happy that we won this match, because we gave from us 150%. We showed strength and I think it was the key to victory. I'm really happy, but I'm also very tired. I wasn’t looking at the result of the match. I wanted to focus on the game and our individual elements. Sometimes it came out, and sometimes not, but in the end it gave us victory today, said after the match Kolosinska. who impressed with efficiency of her block.
Victory with the Americans gave Polish team the first place in Group H and direct promotion to the second round. Kolosinska /Gruszczyńska in the first group match won in two sets with the Finnish team - Sinisalo / Ahtianen. In the Friday’s afternoon, the Polish women's team will face the fight to enter the quarter-finals. Their rival will be the winner of the first round match Lehtonen / Lahti (Finland) - Agatha / Duda (Brazil).
Two other female couples said ‘goodbye’ to the tournament. In group A, Katarzyna Kociolek and Aleksandra Gromadowska lost both matches, although they impressed in the first, finished in tie-break with Brazilian team - Larissa and Talita. Later, they lost their luck in a match against Finnish team Lehtonen / Lahti and lost in two sets. There were too many our mistakes and our mental absence on the court. We played much worse match than it was in the morning game. This shows that we have to work more and more, Kociolek concluded.
Men's Tournament
Men’s teams played only one group match. The top-ranked white-red team – Kantor/Losiak is still struggling with fatigue after traveling from the Long Beach tournament and it was seen in the first group match. Kantor / Losiak played the tie-break and after the fifth match ball sealed the victory over the Brazilian - George / Vitor Felipe. We are definitely a little tired, additionally this match lasted a long time. Medical and technical time-outs made the match longer, Kantor said. The head wanted but the body not necessarily. The victory counts, no matter what style, Łosiak added.
Grzegorz Fijalek and Michal Bryl, who played with Austrian pair Seidl / Horst, were the other winners in the men's tournament. We are delighted that we won because it was our first home game as a new team. We were probably more stressed that we were playing for the first time with the Polish audience. With Austrians we know each other very well and they also appeared in the new composition. Their strength is serve, as we knew that, said after the game Fijalek. I will not wiggle, because it is very good. We play this year as a new team, so we cannot expect fireworks. However, we have made tremendous progress, communication between the block and the defense is very good, said Fijałek.
On Thursday, two Polish teams lost group matches. Maciej Rudol and Jakub Szalankiewicz lost 0-2 against Grimalt’s brothers from Chile. In the end we lacked the skills, we played like juniors, said Szalankiewicz. - I also think we made bad decisions and played poorly. The tournament is not over yet, we return to play on Friday. Now we have to clench fists and fight on. We know we can play well and it can also be in the second group game, added Rudol.
Mariusz Prudel i Kacper Kujawiak played well, but finished the game without success. They were playing with the winners of last year's tournament in Olsztyn - Smedins and Samoilovs. Polish representatives had their chances in the game but they lost 1:2. - We made mistakes and they did not. That was the main difference. Certainly their experience is a percentage, what we could see mainly in the end of the match. We must learn yet, be patient. Step by step and we're going in the right direction, said Prudel.
Friday games will start at 9:00, and until midday men's matches will be held.
